Custom Cabinets At DFC

DFC has a custom cabinet shop for building kitchens, vanities, entertainment units, desks, paneled rooms, mantles, wood counter tops and anything else discriminating clients in the greater Boston area need. Our designer, along with the client’s input and needs, can create any singular, custom environment that will give pleasure and durability for many years.

When designing kitchens, we keep two objectives paramount — to make a beautiful, workable space, comfortable for cooking, and to create a space that facilitates social interaction. To have a spot for kids to sit and work on homework while parents are cooking, to have an informal eating space for breakfast where busy parents can get the kids fed easily in the morning, to have a spot to sip wine while someone cooks— all these are as important as the position of the stove and refrigerator. We focus on the kitchen as a social space, and make sure we design in sight lines and seating to make the kitchen a comfortable “hang” space. It never ceases to amaze me how much time guests spend in the kitchen when entertaining— 100 years ago, the kitchen was never used as an entertaining space. Now it is the primary space for entertaining in most homes. Beauty needs to be married to function to make this work for most people.

When you design a kitchen with DFC, we begin by reviewing design ideas, and photos of kitchens we have completed to determine the overall look you are after, including door and drawer style, and paint color. We discuss where you want food storage, pot and pan storage, appliances, utensils. Understanding how you use your kitchen, and how you hope to use your new kitchen are paramount in this process.

As a Design/Build firm, we work specifically to a price range, determined early in the process. Rather than design in a vacuum, price wise, we make every effort to connect the design to the price range, and steer you back if you start to head off track. At the end of design, we want to have a plan that you can afford to implement.

Why Custom Cabinets?

Customizing cabinets to fit your particular needs ensures maximum utilization of space with a flow to fit your lifestyle. Many restrictions become apparent with stock cabinets. Your dishware may require 13” of interior space where stock wall cabinets are 12” deep. Your space might require a base cabinet to be 37” or 46”, stock cabinets only come in 3” increments, and they fill in the gaps with unsightly filler strips. With a fully custom kitchen, you have total control of the design and function, and truly have a kitchen designed for you and your needs.

Why Wood Countertops?

Wood countertops are a great way to add a beautiful texture and warmth to your kitchen palette. While granite is an excellent choice for many work spaces, islands, eating areas and desks can also use wood tops made in a huge range of species, shapes and finishes. From the clean, modern clarity of a clear coated maple, to the classic look of cherry or black walnut, to the richness of a highly figured exotic hardwood, we can introduce this element into your space and have you enjoy its beauty for years to come.

“Green”

DFC can also build any cabinetry you would need, using only FSC certified hardwood lumber. We also can build with formaldehyde free plywood and MDF.

Technical Specs

Our cabinets are made of the finest quality wood and plywood. Our cabinet parts (sides, bottoms and tops) are constructed of 3/4” A-grade plywood, either pre-finished maple or, if to be painted, birch. Our backs are constructed of 1/2” A-grade plywood, again pre-finished maple or birch. Particle board is never used. Our face frames and doors are made of 1” thick poplar, if paint grade, or of any hardwood species of choice. This thickness in the door and face frame gives the cabinets a solid, substantial feel, and virtually eliminates warping. Many door designs are available from “Shaker” style to raised panel. Panels are usually constructed of 3/8” birch plywood, 3/8” MDF or solid wood panels of choice. Hinges are Blum concealed (Euro style) with Blue motion soft closers. Drawers are constructed of 1/2″ maple, dove tailed corners, with either 1/4″ or 3/8” maple plywood bottoms depending on the size of the drawer. Blum under mount glides with soft close feature and tandem locking device, for easy removal of drawers, are standard. Accuride side mount ball bearing glides are also available. Our kitchens can be designed with hundreds of space saving and innovative accessories, from leading manufacturers like Hafele, Blum and Richilieu. Our wood counter tops are 1 1/4”–1 3/4 thick and made from many species of wood in any shape.
